FedEx launches new logistics hub

Federal Express Corporation, one of the world’s largest express transportation companies, today announced the official inauguration of a new logistics hub at Istanbul Airport (IST). The strategic location places FedEx at the crossroads of routes from West to East, in a rapidly developing country with a growing role in air cargo and international e-commerce.

Among the attendees of the official opening ceremony were Raj Subramaniam, President and CEO of FedEx Corporation, Richard W. Smith, COO International and CEO Airline, FedEx, Wouter Roels, President of FedEx Europe, Eser Sezek, Vice President of Ground Operations FedEx Turkey, and Selahattin Bilgen, CEO of Istanbul Airport iGA, along with other high-ranking representatives of Turkish aviation authorities.

Launched in August 2025, the state-of-the-art hub represents a long-term investment by FedEx in this strategic location. By strengthening its global transportation network, the company reinforces its commitment to supporting global trade through advanced logistics infrastructure and the use of cutting-edge technologies.

The new hub in Istanbul is a strategic step for FedEx toward further integration of our air and ground networks, allowing us to deliver the scale and flexibility our customers expect in a dynamic economic environment. It is also an important decision that will enable us to better leverage the potential of our combined networks, the growing importance of air transport, and to create long-term value – said Richard W. Smith.

A strategic location for global trade

Thanks to its unique position at the crossroads of routes to Europe, Asia, and Africa, Istanbul is an excellent location for a logistics hub. The new FedEx site in Turkey will handle 30 flights per week to key markets in the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East, enabling further expansion of the company’s network in the region. The FedEx air hub in Istanbul is a key point where the company’s air and ground transportation networks converge. The FedEx ground network alone covers 45 countries and handles approximately 1.3 million shipments per week. Istanbul Airport, in turn, is the busiest cargo hub in Europe. Last year, it handled nearly two million tons of freight, growing by 24% year-on-year.

The new FedEx facility, spanning over 25,000 m² and including office space, consolidates all key logistics operations under one roof – from handling air shipments to customs clearance. It also features an automated sorting system, fast shipment security screening, and solutions for handling dangerous goods. With tripled processing capacity, the hub will sort up to 7,000 parcels per hour, significantly enhancing the ability to manage large shipment volumes. The facility is complemented by three automated high-speed X-ray scanners powered by artificial intelligence, further increasing the speed, precision, and security of shipment screening.

We are proud to open this new location, designed to deliver even better and more efficient logistics solutions for our customers who aim to grow in global markets. By leveraging the latest technologies and advanced automation solutions, we are building an even smarter network to provide our customers with the highest quality of service – said Eser Sezek, Vice President of Ground Operations FedEx Turkey.
